The Inner Seasons of the Menstrual Cycle

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

It is well recognised that rhythmical life is vital for healthy functioning of our bodies and souls. Think of the cycles in our lives - seasonal, circadian (day/night) and ultradian rhythms (blood circulation, pulse)...and of course the menstrual cycle. But the MC and all of its powers is the one we have been told to ignore! But what would happen if we awakened the deeply embodied intelligence that lies within?

In 2005 Alexandra Pope came up with the concept of the inner seasons of the menstrual cycle. This concept is that each month we move through an inner winter, spring, summer and autumn and each of these 'inner seasons' is corresponds to a different phase of the menstrual cycle.

The inner winter is menstruation

The inner spring is follicular phase

The inner summer is ovulation

The inner autumn is premenstrual phase

Each phase contains both powers and challenges. The inner seasons are a profound way to get to know yourself better than ever before. They can help ease difficult menstrual symptoms such as PMDD and they can inspire great creativity and even spiritual alignment.

The inner seasons are your guide, template, ally.

They are there to help you pace your energy, calm your nervous system and retrieve insight on your overall wellbeing. You can develop skills to handle emotions and make better choices around behaviour, while building in boundaries and self care.

It's a means of personal therapy that once you access, you simply won't be able to live without.
